Cancer patients 'abandoned after treatment'

The number of cancer patients being admitted to hospital through accident and emergency has doubled in less than a decade amid claims they are being "abandoned" after receiving treatment, a report has found.

Such admissions are meant to be "the exception" but the number has increased from 70,000 in 2000/01 to 140,000 in 2008/09, according to the National Audit Office (NAO).

Macmillan Cancer Support said that showed too many patients were not being cared for properly after being given treatment like chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

According to the NAO's report, which examines how well the NHS has managed to deliver the last government's five year Cancer Report Strategy so far, waiting times have fallen and the number of days cancer patients spend in hospital has dropped.

Drug companies are today accused of making exorbitant profits from the NHS by exploiting arrangements designed to encouraged them to develop new drugs for rare diseases.

Twenty consultants and a patients' group are publishing an open letter to the prime minister, calling for an inquiry. They tell David Cameron that, far from inventing new drugs, companies are in effect repackaging them to get a licence, enabling them to hike the price hugely.

Legislation was brought in by the EU to encourage companies to devise and seek licences for new drugs for what are called "orphan" diseases - those for which there is not a huge market because they are relatively rare.

NHS website gets 100m hits a year

The NHS is saving £44m a year because so many people go online and diagnose themselves - avoiding expensive GP appointments, it has been claimed.

The NHS website receives more than 100million visits a year and a study has found one third of those people logging onto the site do not then make an appointment with their GP.

A team at Imperial College London calculated this saves the NHS £44m a year.

The annual report of the NHS Choices website said there has been a 10 per cent increase in visits to the site this year, compared to 2009.

Google doodle celebrates 115 years of X-rays

Google is celebrating the 115th anniversary of the X-ray with its latest doodle - and also nodding to its own past April Fools jokes, with the idea of "PigeonRank", where the ordering of pages would be determined by pigeon pecks.

The X-ray is usually credited to Wilhelm Rontgen, who was the first to study its effects in 1895, though he wasn't the first to observe them: that occured in 1875, when scientists investigating cathode rays -high energy electron beams - noticed that unexposed photographic tubes put near the tubes in which the rays were generated became fogged.

Organ transplants reach record high

Record numbers of Britons underwent an organ transplant last year to save, extend or improve their lives, figures from the NHS show today.

Hospitals carried out a total of 3,706 transplants of organs including livers, kidneys, hearts and lungs in 2009-10, up 5% on the year before, according to NHS Blood and Transplant's annual report.

This was made possible by the numbers of deceased and living donors also setting new records. Organs were retrieved from 959 dead donors and 1,061 living donors, up by 7% and 10% respectively.

GPs warm to private sector

GPs are becoming more likely to refer patients to the private sector due to increasing pressures on the NHS, research has indicated.

More than half (53%) of GPs are now more likely to send patients to the private sector for low priority operations, a survey sponsored by hospital provider General Healthcare Group (GHG) suggested.

This has been due to cutbacks on NHS budgets and capacity.

A&E Time-Wasters Cost NHS £27M

PATIENTS who turn up at accident and emergency departments with trifling ailments are costing cash-strapped hospital trusts in just one region £27million a year.

In the past six months an estimated 200,000 people have sought treatment at the 13 A&E units in Greater Manchester for minor complaints such as colds and bruises.

The figures, described as "alarming" by health chiefs, emerged as the NHS in Greater Manchester is under pressure to save nearly £1billion by 2015.

The £27million lost to time-wasters every year in the region would pay for an extra 650 nurses, 250 GPs or 30,000 nights in intensive care.

The cancer drugs fund to pay for medicines turned down for use on the NHS will be worth £200m a year, ministers have confirmed.

It had been feared the fund would be cut in the austerity drive as Lord Howe, health minister, appeared to back-track on the Tory election pledge by saying the £200m figure was 'aspirational'.

Now Andrew Lansley, health secretary, has confirmed the fund will launch in April as planned.

Only one in four doctors has faith in Government's plans for NHS

Only one in four doctors believe that the Government's controversial plans for the NHS will improve patient care, according to a new survey.

Andrew Lansley, the Health Secretary, has claimed that the reorganisation of the national health service will speed up waiting times and ensure high standards of care.

But the biggest survey of medical opinion since the comprehensive spending review has found that only 23 per cent of doctors agree with him.

The survey for the King's Fund think tank will come as a blow to Mr Lansley's huge reorganisation, that will see England's 152 primary care trusts (PCTs) abolished and consortiums of GPs assume responsibility for the commissioning of services for patients.

Spending Review: NHS gets 'bare minimum' funding rise

The NHS budget in England will get the above inflation rises it was promised this parliament, but by only the "bare minimum" margin.

Funding will rise by £10bn to £114bn over the next four years - the equivalent of a 0.1% a year hike in real terms.

But the NHS still has to make some sacrifices.

Plans for one-week urgent cancer tests are being scrapped, while unions warned futher cuts were inevitable.

Concerns are being raised because historically health spending has gone up by over 4% in real terms.

This is because the ageing population, obesity and the cost of new drugs mean an extra 3% is needed just to stand still.

"No decision about me, without me" is the new NHS maxim, reflecting the healthcare system's plans to give patients access to and control over their healthcare records via the internet. Patients would be assigned usernames and passwords, their records would be available online for reference and updating, and those seeking treatment would be able to research and compare different options.

While patients already have a lot of say over their treatment, the Government plans to extend patients' control to mental health services and end of life care.

MPs debate welcomed by infected blood campaigners

A campaign for recognition of patients caught up in a 1980s contaminated blood scandal, has won an historic House of Commons debate.

Pontypridd MP Owen Smith won the debate, the first led by backbench MPs, after one of his constituents died.

Haemophiliac Leigh Sugar, 44, died in June of liver cancer caused by Hepatitis C he contracted through contaminated blood in the 1980s.

His family joined campaigners lobbying for compensation.

Mr Smith said Thursday's debate was "hugely" important and he hoped it would be the first step to a full inquiry and a UK government-backed compensation scheme.

New report highlights that investment in staff health and wellbeing is money well spent

HR managers have successfully saved their companies millions of pounds by investing in the health and wellbeing of their staff, according to a new report published today by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP).

According to the report, companies providing workplace benefits such as physiotherapy services make significant savings through higher productivity and fewer absences caused by conditions such as back pain and joint injuries, which are known as musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).

The survey found three out of 10 managers believe staff who call in sick with a recurring condition are well enough to work, but just don't want to.

A third find such absences irritating because others have to take on additional workload, while 22% say it's a drain on their business they cannot afford.

Half of employees feel their bosses don't care about their health and a quarter fear being sacked or made redundant down the line if they take time off sick.

Nearly two thirds (63%) of SMEs do not provide occupational health services to staff.

'Tax on the sick' as hospitals increase car park charges by as much as 150 per cent

Hospitals have drastically increased parking charges since the Government scrapped plans to abolish the controversial fees.

Some NHS trusts have exploited the opportunity to increase rates by as much as 150 per cent in the past few weeks, forcing patients to pay as much as £2.50 an hour.

Last month the Government said it was abandoning Labour's pledge to end parking charges within three years, claiming the measure would be 'too expensive'.

Hospitals will now be free to charge patients as much as £4 an hour - the limit set by the Government - and it has since emerged that trusts have wasted no time in taking advantage of the change of policy.

Campaigners have described the increases as 'opportunistic' and a 'tax on the sick'.

Wii puts elderly patients on road to recovery

Elderly patients in Tallaght Hospital have taken to the Nintendo Wii console as a replacement for physiotherapy -- to help them with severe mobility problems.

Some 13 patients between the ages of 74 and 87 played bowling, tennis and golf on the Wii as part of a study, to find out if the computer games helped their fitness.

Anne-Marie Scanlon, a chartered physiotherapist at the hospital, supervised the project from August 2009 to last January.

"All patients are over 65. We had a wide variety, some had suffered strokes in the past, some had arthritis, and others had severe illness and were getting back on their feet," she said.

"Some of them were reluctant at first because they were quite new to them. They may not have used computers or games but with practise they got used to it and really enjoyed it."

NHS funding cut for homeopathy because it has 'no clinical benefit'

A health board has become the first in Scotland to begin phasing out homeopathic treatments on the NHS, after deciding they provide no clinical benefit.

NHS Highland spends a minimum of £13,000 a year on referrals to two homeopathic practitioners in Inverness. But it decided yesterday to withdraw support for the alternative therapy, which has come under fire recently by doctors and a cross-party group of MPs.

In February the Commons science and technology committee said the NHS should stop funding homeopathy, which it said acted only as a placebo. In June the British Medical Association also urged the Scottish NHS to withdraw the £1.5m spent each year on homeopathic treatments.

Light drinkers denied IVF to save NHS cash...and even the alcohol intake of husbands can count against couples

Women who drink fewer than two glasses of wine a day are being denied free IVF as NHS trusts impose strict rules on who gets fertility treatment.

Even those who barely drink at all could be turned down if their partners are deemed to be exceeding recommended alcohol limits.

Health trusts insist they are simply following Department of Health guidelines which warn against excessive drinking, particularly in pregnancy, but experts have accused them of discriminating solely to save money.

Critics say there is no evidence that those who drink slightly more than the recommended limit will be any less successful with IVF.

Trust fund is vital for future GPs

Medical studies are in danger of being closed off to the most affluent, an experienced GP has warned.

Mair Williams, who began studying medicine at the age of 29, said she would have struggled to qualify as a doctor in 2010 because of rising tuition costs.

The 67-year-old Skewen doctor said medical and physiotherapy students were becoming more reliant upon charitable organisations such as The Mullany Fund.

Dr Williams said: "Schemes like The Mullany Fund are very important to medical students, especially those who have decided to go into the profession later in life. The current costs to students are making medicine more prohibitive than ever.

Smokers and the obese could be paid to give up their vices as part of NHS incentives designed to promote a healthier lifestyle.

An NHS advisory group suggested offering incentives to people to quit smoking or eat healthier food can lead to positive changes.

A pilot scheme saw pregnant women being awarded supermarket vouchers to give up cigarettes and the obese paid to lose an agreed amount of weight.

Children were also offered toys as a reward for eating more fruit and vegetables.

Owning a dog could help to lower the risk of childhood obesity, according to researchers.

A study of children in 78 inner-city primary schools in England found children in homes with dogs were more active than those without.

Researchers from St George's, University of London, were carrying out a study on child heart health.

Banning newly qualified young drivers from night-time motoring, drinking any alcohol or carrying passengers of a similar age could save 200 lives a year and lead to 1,700 fewer injuries, according to researchers.

A Cardiff University study says NHS costs in treating people involved in road accidents could be significantly cut if a system of graduated driver licensing (GDL) was introduced for 17 to 24 year olds and operated for up to two years after they passed their driving tests.

Poor public awareness highlights radiotherapy's 'Cinderella' status

Only one in ten people know that radiotherapy helps cure 40 per cent of cancer patients, according to new figures published by Cancer Research.

The survey of more than 2,000 people from across the UK also reveals that just 14 per cent are aware that half of all cancer patients could benefit from radiotherapy as part of their treatment.

Cancer Research UK believes lack of public awareness about radiotherapy's importance in treating cance is having a serious impact on providing world class treatment for the UK.

The survey showed that the public rate of cancer treatments - surgery, chemotherapy or targeted drugs - higher than radiotherapy as cutting edge treatments.

Instead focus on achievements that set you apart from other candidates. Use the past tense as this conveys the fact that something has been completed, i.e. you have "achieved" something. The use of action words and power verbs are vital in helping you promote your skills and experience in this way. Try to avoid using too many abbreviations and acronyms, as these can often confuse employers. It is also best to avoid personal pronouns in your CV as these become redundant quickly. It is a flexible document and may be tailored o suit certain specific employers. For example if your experience is particularly suited for a job then you may wish to display this information first.

There are three main ways in which CV content can be styled, Chronological, Targeted or Functional.

A Chronological CV displays your career history in Reverse Chronological order, starting with your most recent post first. If you are continuing in the same profession then the most recent position held should contain most information, as it is far more likely to be most relevant. This style of CV is very useful for demonstrating natural progression and advancement.

A Functional CV is skills based rather than describing employers that you have previously worked for. It is useful if you have held a number of positions that are not necessarily connected but which rely on similar skills. It is useful for condensing a number of similar jobs into one.

A Targeted CV is usually written in a style that is a combination of functional and chronological styles. It is best used when aiming for a specific position and is written with the job in mind. A targeted CV needs to be written in a clear a concise fashion and must have a clear objective in mind. This style of CV is particularly useful when attempting to emphasise skills and experience that may have been attained outside of paid employment and not necessarily prevalent in your last position.
